The Sharp X68000 was a desktop computer released in 1987 and sold only in Japan. It has gained a cultish following due to its rarity, the fact it had some unusual arcade ports and because of the design of the tower. It was this last feature which led me to discover it lately. It has a monolithic, slab-like quality which reminds me of 80s cyberpunk. It is utterly at odds with the current trend among designers of mass market devices to negate or remove towers entirely. In our era of light-as-a-feather glass-and-aluminium technology the design of the X68000 has a formidable heft which I find refreshing.
